U/16 Club Nationals, Done & Dusted for 2017

MC Boys U/16

The trip got off to an unexpected beginning with the Virgin flight to Sydney being cancelled. The opportunity for team bonding presented itself and the athletes, coach and manager spent the day at Airport West Shopping Centre taking in a film and trying their hardest to use up the food vouchers provided by Virgin. Despite the delay and even though flagging a little with a late arrival into Sydney, the accommodation, well stocked with food due to the online grocery delivery was enough to lift everyone’s spirits. The athletes were keen to get right into the competition and stoically faced up to the top seed team UWA City Beach Bears for their first game. Fiercely determined the scores stayed low, MC showing grit and focus. Athletes were positive and in good form.

They played off for fifth position and finished sixth, three spots higher than their entry seeding. There was a silver lining for the 16U NCC MCWPC team with the award of Goalkeeper of the Tournament presented to a deserving Max Lowe. As always, there were many lessons learned and skills refined, with Coach and Manager satisfied on the whole with the trip and its outcomes

MC Girls U/16

The girls had a very successful campaign at the NCC tournament in Hobart.

Seeded 18th, they had a very tough draw against many of the top 8 teams in the comp.

Our girls played beautifully – showing their much improved technical skills, strength, passion and heart, at the same time demonstrating that Melbourne Collegians are a team to be reckoned with.

The games where they lost were all very tight scores – against some of the best players and teams in the tournament (Drummoyne, Cronulla Blues and SNB Breakers).

The girls finished in 11th place overall, and, had the crossover been kinder, we believe could have finished top 8. In 2016 they finished 21st; against that and our seeding, it was a massive improvement.

Apart from great polo, the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves, forging closer friendships with each other and opposing teams.

This was the first time that Babis coached the girls in a national comp, and his past, vast experience and coaching skills came into play. Without his guidance and belief in the girls it could have been a very different result.

Congratulations to everyone involved.
